How can the mustang suspension be improved?
- Change all suspension pivot points from rubber bushings to firm urethane
bushings.
- Use upper rear control arms that are adjustable.
- Increase the spring rates to firm up the handling of the car.
- Use rear coilover shocks that have external dampening control to fine
tune the suspension.
- Change all front and rear control arms to tubular arms which are lighter
and stronger than stock stamped steel arms.
- Add additional alignment adjustments.
- Use strut tower braces in the front and frame connectors in the rear
to reduce unit body flex.
I'm sure Ford spent a lot of money design the
mustang suspension, so why spend more to modify it?
The suspension design for any production car represents a series of compromises,
none of which help performance ride and handling. The changes made will
usually include:
- Softer springs for a comfortable cruise ride.
- Lower shock dampening rates to match the softer springs.
- Large rubber bushings at all suspension pivot points to reduce road
noise transmission and provide a soft comfortable ride, with the least
expensive material.
- Progressive rate springs to provide a soft cushy ride on modest bumps
with a stiff enough rate to reduce the possibility of suspension bottoming
on severe bumps.
Is Urethane better than Rubber? Why?
Yes. Urethane performs almost as well as rubber to isolate the body from
suspension vibrations and noises, while eliminating most, if not all,
lateral suspension movement permitted by rubber bushings. Large rubber
bushings may permit up to 1/4 inch distortion under stress. An example
of problems created by rubber bushings is rear wheel hop under hard acceleration
or braking.
How will ride height adjustment help my Mustang?
When you lower the ride height of a car you lower the roll center of the
car. This will reduce body roll in cornering. The height adjustment permits
you to make minor changes in the ride height to provide the ride stance
you want.
What is the benefit of stiffer spring rates?
Firmer springs reduce body roll in cornering, tighten the handling on
varying road surfaces, and improve the drivers "feel" of the
road condition. Coilovers use springs that a readily available in a wide
range of spring rates and lengths. This spring rate selection means that
the spring that will provide just the ride you want is readily available.
How will adjustable dampening shocks help?
A firmer shock dampening rate will reduce the speed with which the suspension
moves in response to any pressure, be it a bump, hard corner, abrupt acceleration
or braking, etc. This permits fine tuning of the suspension and also provides
the ability of temporary suspension tuning for a specific purpose such
as a race. A significant increase in dampening can reduce or eliminate
rear end squat in drag racing or stiffen the suspension for road racing
type events.
What are the benefits of tubular control arms?
- Stronger and lighter than stock arms.
- Most use urethane bushings, rather than rubber.
- Improved appearance.
- Some pieces may include additional adjustments.
Why will strut tower braces and sub-frame connectors help the handling
of my Mustang (or any other car)?
With the emphasis on weight reduction to improve engine economy, some
flex of the unit body must be accepted by the design engineer. Properly
designed strut tower braces and sub-frame connectors will help to reduce
this flex. Why didn't Ford add these items at the factory? Weight and
cost is why. If you are building 100,000 cars per year, a $10 extra cost
per car adds up to $1,000,000. This really makes a manufacturer watch
every penny of cost.
What products do you have for the front of my
Mustang?
Tubular control arms and coilover struts. The coilover struts may be used
with stock control arms. The tubular control arms require coilover struts
since there is no spring mount on the control arm. Elimination of a stock
style spring mount provides additional weight reduction from the stock
type control arm. Important features include:
- Tubular arms are stronger and lighter than stock.
- Firm urethane bushings are used in the control arms.
- A stock sway bar attachment is provided on the control arm.
- Coilovers have new top plate to provide additional caster adjustment.
- Substantial ride height adjustment with the coilover strut. Extensive
spring rate selection is available.

What products do you have for the rear of my
Mustang?
Tubular lower control arms, adjustable upper control arms, and coilovers.
The tubular lower control arms have a mounting point for stock sway bar,
firm urethane bushings, and are much stronger than the stock arms. The
upper adjustable arms use a spherical bearing on the front end and attaches
to the stock rubber bushing on the axle. A blend of right and left hand
threads permits adjustment on the car to change pinion angle and axle
centering. Important features include:
Tubular lower control arms are stronger, lighter, and cleaner in appearance
than stock arms.
Upper adjustable arms permit pinion angle adjustment and axle centering.
Coilovers provide substantial ride height adjustment, ample spring rate
choices, and variable dampening.
